Dyson OnTrac Combines Aeroacoustics and Design

Dyson, which turns every product it launches into an object of desire, takes its claim in the wearable technologies category one step further with its new headphone design Dyson OnTrac. With its 55-hour battery life, advanced active noise cancellation technology and personalised design, Dyson OnTrac headphones will steal the hearts of not only Dyson enthusiasts but also the Z generation. We were at Dyson Turkey office to experience Dyson OnTrac, which combines the brand's 30 years of aeroacoustic experience with sound science.

Dyson, which continues to be the leader in categories such as vacuum cleaners, hair styling and air purifiers, enters a highly competitive market with its new headset Dyson OnTrac with the claim of combining audio excellence with design. If you ask ‘Why does Dyson develop headphones?’, you should consider that Dyson has specialised in sound as part of its thirty-year product development process, with countless engineers working for hours on noise reduction. Since James Dyson designed the first innovative vacuum cleaner, the Dual Cyclone, which separated dust from air, he has developed products in many different categories. Almost all of these products are motors and technologies that work with airflow. The air flow accelerated by the motor generates noise. Preventing this noise is at least as important as the primary functionality of the product, especially in designs used in the head area such as hair dryers and hair styllers.

Dyson has made significant progress in controlling sound waves and frequencies with the technologies they have developed over the past 30 years. They have managed to develop very quiet machines. Among these, the Dyson Zone, launched three years ago, can take the first place. The most important feature of this hybrid headphone design, which also has an air purification function, is the presence of an air-cleaning filter and a motor in both ears. In this way, you could breathe fresh air while listening to music indoors or outdoors with poor air quality. However, for this design, Dyson engineers had to overcome a major challenge. Unlike the headphones on the market, Dyson Zone had to prevent not only the sound coming from outside, but also the sound of the motor and air flow in the headphones. The brand's first product in the wearable technology category overcame many challenges, but it could not have the desired effect due to its heavy weight and high price for long-term use.

Dyson has combined its research and experience in this process in the first headset to focus solely on sound, called OnTrac. Prioritising quality sound experience, Dyson OnTrac features a special ANC (Active Noise Cancellation) algorithm with eight microphones placed in two ears. This system is designed to eliminate all external sound and noise in the environment. External sound is captured 384,000 times per second, blocking unwanted noise up to 40 decibels. Integrated with the MyDyson app, this system monitors and reports external noise in real time.

There are two neodymium speakers, one in each ear set, orientated at a 13-degree angle to your ear. This allows them to clearly transmit every note from deep sub-bass to high-frequency highs with a wide sound range from 6 Hz to 21 kHz.

High-density ear cushions made of durable microfibre foam fit snugly around the ear and wrap around the ear to create a clear seal, while the breathable texture provides comfort. Thanks to the high-capacity lithium batteries placed in the head strap, Dyson OnTrac offers 55 hours of uninterrupted music experience. The device can be used for 2.5 hours with a 10-minute charge and 9.5 hours with a 30-minute charge.

Perhaps the most important feature of the product is that Dyson successfully applied the design touches that contributed to Dyson's market leadership to Dyson OnTrac. Developed by industrial designers and the CMF team, the product comes in four different colour options and the design can be personalised with various combinations of outer cover and ear cushion. Available in metallic grey, metallic copper, ceramic bright red and metallic syah, the headphones are characterised by their durable and aesthetic coating. The outer covers are made of lightweight and durable aluminium with ceramic or anodised coatings. You can buy them all separately and personalise them to suit your own style. Allowing more than 2,000 colour combinations, OnTrac claims to be a pioneer in creating unique styles, which is the way Generation Z expresses itself. Dyson, which appeals to a certain user group with its products in the home category, will undoubtedly expand its target audience with OnTrac.
